A survey
of major current federal and state environmental legislation.
The role of various governmental agencies responsible for implementation
of statutes also will be covered. Simulations of regulation enforcement
situations will be included. Lecture: 2 hours. 2 credits.
HP-120
- Introduction to Radiation Biology
An introduction to the effects of ionizing radiation on living
tissue. Cellular response, pathology, short term and long term
effects are covered. Lecture: 3 hours. Preq: BIO 103 and BSL 101.

HP-201
- Nuclear Instrumentation And Measurement I
Introduction
to the principles of operation and use of portable radiation survey
instruments, counting room instrumentation including GM and proportional
counters, and liquid scintillation. Introduces gamma ray spectroscopy.
Lecture: 3 hours; Laboratory: 2 hours. Prereq: HP 102. 4 credits.
HP-202
- Nuclear Instrumentation and Measurement II
A continuation
of HP 201 with particular emphasis on identifying and quantifying
radioactive materials. Extensive training in the use of multi-channel
analyzers in alpha, beta and gamma spectroscopy is provided. 4
Credits.
IS-201
- Occupational Health and Industrial Hygiene Methods
Occupational
health hazards are identified along with the methods used to determine
if such exposures exist, and to what extent. Principles for controlling
such exposures are identified, including physical changes, ventilation,
and biological monitoring. Lecture: 2 hours; Laboratory 4 hours
Prereq: IS 100. 4 credits.
